Fashion Technique & Material Exploration

Description

This is an introductory assessment for students. First time exploring techniques and materials use in design process. Students required to find their design personality and identity from design stroke up to design characteristic. In this stage, students are required to explore various types of materials and understand the characteristic of fabric use in their design. Student should be able to implement the understanding of design elements and fashion design principles on their sketches. Each student is required to produce 10 Design Illustrations.

Idea Exploration

For the collection, I was told to do something that represent who I am and to try to illustrate the design using my own style. For me personally, I'm a big fan of denim wear and leather. I don't really like something that looks feminine but something that shows boldness. If I had to describe my style it'd be edgy but elegance and that's exactly what I'm trying to do here.

The entire collection was inspired by a fictional character named Maeve Wiley. She's one of the main characters of a netflix series. When I look at this character I always feel like I see myself in her.

She has a bold and outspoken personality. Apart from being intelligent and a sarcastic social outcast, she also has a really great style. Her grunge style is on full display throughout the series and reflects her personality, or rather, she wants people to see her personality: cool, different and "bad girl" and I try to put those characteristics into every look.

The 10 Design Illustration

For the first five looks, I'm using denim and leather fabric. However, the majority of those pieces are made of denim because that's the main idea for the first five looks and I'm just mixing a little bit with leather to give a stronger character to the outfits.

And for the next five looks, I'm using leather  and flannel fabric because that's the theme for the next looks  but with a mixture of  tulle fabric and a little bit of lace.

The Element and Principles of Design

Some of the elements of design that I've included in the design are shape, color and texture. For the shape, there are some geometric shapes that have been used in the design like circle, square and triangle. Next, there are also a few different colors that are being used which are blue and black. The usage of different types of fabrics like denim, leather, tulle and lace are giving a different types of texture to the whole collection.

Furthermore, there are also a few pricinples of design that have been implemented into the design like contrast, balance and unity. All the ten looks are obviously being contrasted with different colors and textures of the fabric so the whole collection doesn't look boring. Next, most of the looks in the collection are symmetrical balance because both sides of each look appear identical. Lastly, one of the most important principles of design that I try to achieve here is unity. As you can see in the image above, the overall look in a garment create a sense of harmony between all the principles by using the same fabric and detailing to avoid a chaotic or a lifeless design.
