Assignment 2
Basic Fitted Garments
Description
Students tasked is to sew on a basic fitted garment using a sewing machine. Students are required to produce a garment by manipulation the Master Pattern Block and produce a desired basic top and bottom including:
- ONE type of collar (flat or standing collar), or student may construct the collar separately
- ONE bottom piece (pants or skirt)
The Process
The Basic Bodice
I start off by placing all the pattern pieces of the bodice on the fabric
Then, I remove the pattern pieces after done making the mark before cutting them
The next picture was supposed to show what the pattern pieces look like after I have done cutting them but I lost the picture. However, this is what it looks like after I have done joining all the pattern pieces together.
The sleeves
Just like the bodice, I place the pattern first then marking the fabric. I do the same thing twice for left and right sleeves.
After I have done cutting the pattern, I then proceed to fold the sleeves like the picture below and pin them to start sewing the side seams
Then, when I have done sewing the seams, I press open the seams
I also start pinning them in the armhole of the bodice and joining them together and this is what it looks like so far.
Then I proceed to add a collar to finish it up. I start by creating a mandarin collar pattern first and place it on the fabric. Then, I cut it out and start pinning it to hold it in place and start sewing the seam.
Finally, after the seam is sewn, I start joining it to the neckline and this is how it turns out.
The Basic Skirt
Firstly, I make marks of the pattern and then fold the fabric to have both sides of the skirt
After I have the front and the back pattern cut, I start sewing the darts first
This is what the darts look like after I have done sewing them
Next, I proceed to sew the side seams
This is how it turns out after the darts and the side seams are sewn
I press open the right side seam of the skirt to insert the zipper and expose the zipper by ripping the seam open using a seam ripper.
Finally, I finish it up by adding a waistband. I start placing the pattern on the fabric and cut it out.
Then, I fold the fabric and give a little press along the top part of the waistband to have a nice sharp line and it makes the waistband looks neat.
Before I started to join it to the skirt I finish the side seams first and place the interfacing inside of it after.
Then, I start pinning it along the waist and start sewing it and this is what the final result looks like.
Reflection
This is my very first experience sewing a top and a skirt. when I was doing the assignment I have realized how terrible I am at it. However, I would love to learn more in-depth about sewing in terms of the sewing machine itself and various different techniques I can use when sewing in order to develop a better skill.
