Description
In this final project, it is important for students to develop their design ideas using skills that they have obtained throughout the semester. This semester students will be creating an “Essential Fashion” capsule collection. The essential items is the must have items in consumer wardrobe and can be easily transform and match to follow the recent trends. Each student are required to design an essential collection for their target market using design technique learn in this semester. Students required to find their speciality and identity that represent the designer creativity. Experiment with silhouette, texture, and colour mixture is important in this project.
The capsule collection is consist of 15 looks. As the theme of this project called an “Essential Fashion” you may design the collection with a number of recurrent “essential” piece (repeating a certain piece with a different styling / color choice). You are required to discuss with your lecture to select 4 items that represent your “essential fashion” collection or piece that stands out of your collection and start your making them in your Pattern Making and Garment Production Class.
Since we are required to create 4 items that best represent the whole essential collection this is what I have decided to make;
The first outfit is just going to be a prototype, so I am not going to use the actual fabric
Feedback
when I first showed Mr. Riza and Miss Maria the design, they didn't want me to use the actual fabric for the turtle neck since im just working with a portable sewing machine, so, they ended up choosing the second outfit to be made with my fabric of choice.
The Outcome
The Making Process
Turtleneck Sweater (Prototype)
I start off by placing the pattern on the fabric. Then, I start cutting them.
Right after I have done cutting the fabric the first thing i do here is finishing the darts. Then I continue finish up each side seam.
Here is a close up look at the stitches.
Then I proceed to joining the sleeve. Same thing, I finish the side seams first and then start attaching them to the arm holes.
After I have done with the sleeves, here is a close up look at the sleeves.
So far this what we have after the bodice and the sleeves have been joined together.
Since this is supposed to be a turtleneck sweater, I continue adding the turtle neck to the neckline. As you can see, I start of by pinning the pattern on fabric first before I start cutting it so it stays in place as I am doing so. I place it 1cm away from the fold line because I just have to extend 1 cm more otherwise it's not going to fit well to the neckline.
After I have done cutting the fabric. I start pining the fabric since the fabric is folded into a half, then, start finish up the side seam before I can join it to the neckline
Here is another close up look at the stitches.
When all the side seams are done. Then I proceed to attaching it arounf the neckline.
Finally, I have done making the turtleneck sweater prototype and this what the neck looks like before and after I fold it.
This is what it looks like from another angle.
Leather Flare Pants (Prototype)
I start of my placing the pattern on the fabric before I can cut them
The first thing I do here is the fly. I put the zipper next to the centre front to see
how long the zipper is going to be and where it is going to end and do some markings as well. Then, I am taking it to my machine to sew along the marking that I just did. For the fly, I am using a normal stitch along the curve but a loser stitch along the vertical line because the stitch is going to be removed later on.
After I have done sewing that part. I open the pants and start ironing the middle part so it is opened nicely before i can start placing and sewing the zipper in the fly.
Then I place the right side of the zipper facing the pants and start sewing it to the fly but not to the pants.
This is what the side of the fly look like after I have done sewing it together with the zipper.
After that step is done, then flip the pants over because I am going to top stitch on the left side of the pants.
Then, this is what the fly ended up looking like after I have done doing top stitch on the left side of the pants and ripped out the centre front stitch that I did earlier
When the fly is done, then I start to combining both front and back pieces together and start pinning along the side seam to hold both of the pieces together and start finishing up the side seams.
The final step of the pants is doing the waistband. This is what the pattern of the waistband looks like. After I have done cutten all the eight pieces which are for the front and back, i am ready to sew the side seams to create two pieces for both sides of the waistband.
Then I start joining both of the front and back pieces together to create a one-piece of the waistband.
After I have done sewing all the seams and combining both of the pieces together, I am ready to join the waistband along the waistline of the pants.
After the back side of the waistband is sewn, I turn the waistband over and start doing the top stitch to finish up the waistband.
This what it looks like after every step is completed.
This is the back side of the pants.
Finally, this is what a prototype of the leather flare pants looks like from another angle.
Blazer
For the blazer, the first thing I do is placing all the patterns i have and start cutting them.
This what all the pieces look like after everything is cut.
I also proceed to use the exact same pattern for the lining and place each pattern I need for it on a silk fabric.
After everything is cut, I start cutting the jacket interfacing using the exact same pattern as well but this time without the seam allowances because the interfacings are going to be stick inside of the jacket and start ironing them to the fabrics. So far, this is what all the panels look like after every interfacing has been fused to the base fabric.
Then, I start pinning up the facings to the front part of the blazer for both of the side and finish up the side seams.
After that step is done, I proceed to attach all of the panels of the blazer i have and finish up all the side seams. At this point, I can alreasy get the idea on how the blazer is going to look like.
After that, I continue doing the sleeves by attaching the lining behind the sleeves because the lining is going to be the inner side of the blazer and this how I do it.
Before I started joining the sleeves to the armholes, I decided to finish up the shoulder side seam first then start sewing the sleeves to the armholes.
After I have done working on the sleeves, I then proceed to sew the side of the back collar and start attaching it along the neckline.
After every panel of the blazer is sewn together, this what the outer side of the blazer looks like and I am pretty happy with how it ends up looking like.
The last part is to join the lining to the blazer. Firstly, I finish all the side seams of the lining so it is going to be easier for me when it is time to join it inside the blazer.
Then, I proceed pinning up the side seams of the lining inside of the blazer and this how I do it.
Finally, this what the inside of the blazer looks like after I have done sewing the lining.
Long pants
The first thing I do is cutting the fabric and this what every panel that I need for the pants looks like.
The process of making the pants is similar to the flare pants except the shape of the pants is slightly different. The first thing I do right after every panel is cut is the fly. Although this is the second time I make pants, I still prefer to do the fly first before I start finishing up the side seams. As you can see in the picture, I start off by sewing the centre front line of the front piece first.
I use a normal stitch for the curved part and a looser stitch for the vertical line because that part is going to be removed later on because that is where the zipper opening is going to be.
Then I proceed to sew all the dart I have on every side of the pants.
After that, I press open the fly so it is going to be easier for me to sew a zipper there.
Firstly, I sew the right side of the zipper first to the fly and then sew the other side of the zipper to the left side of the fly.
After the zipper is sewn to the fly, I turn the pants over start doing the top stitch on left side of the pants as shown in the picture below.
At this point, I am ready to remove the centre front stitch that I did earlier so I will be able to open the zipper and this is how the fly turns out.
Then, I proceed to finishing up all the side seams of the pants and this what the pants look like so far.
Next, the last step of making the pants is by adding the waistband.
After I have sewing all the side seams, then, I start attaching both sides of the waistband together before I can start joining it to the waistline of the pants.,
After all the side seams are sewn, I am ready to sew the waistband along the waistline and this what the final outcome ended up looking like.
I am quite satisfied with how the sencond pants turned out because since this is the second time I made a pair of pants, it just looks so much neater than the first pants. However, the pants are going to be worn with the blazer because this is supposed to be a suit.
Reflection
I have spent so many hours for days working on every single garment for the collection. What I have realized is that I am starting to get better at using the sewing machine although my sewing skill is still terrible. Even though every item I made did not turn out the way I wanted them to be, I am still satisfied with what I have done here because I really did try my best to turn my sketch into a real piece of garment. However, I am still not going to beat myself up for messed up so much during the making process because I believe it is just a matter of time before I can be better at it and I all I need is just some more guidance from the lecturers to help me improve.
