Concept Board

For the collection, I wanted to do streetwear style. The concept is to create something casual but in a sophisticated way. The whole collection is designed for the spring and winter seasons. Since the requirement is to create “essential” clothing items, most of the main pieces are consist of blazers, jackets, leather pants, long jackets, etc. These types of clothing items will never go out of style and can be styled based on the current fashion trends. Not to mention, everything within the collections is quite versatile and can be worn in many different ways.

The Inspiration/ Story.

The whole collection was inspired by my mother's curtain. I got the idea of using my mother's curtain as the inspiration because of a designer Porte Jacquemus when he did a fall 2020 ready-to-wear collection where he reflected on the first thing he ever made was a skirt out of a curtain for his mother within the collection. 'Mal du pays' which means missing home is a collection about how being away from home always reminds me of my mother because we both are really close and she is one of the people I would reach out to whenever I am feeling stressed out about my studies. When I was away from home for a whole year because I was doing my foundation, I visited my friend's house and they also had the exact same curtain with the same vintage floral print on it and it strangely made me feel like I was at home as I was staring at it and it certainly reminds me of my mother. What so sentimental about this curtain is that it used to be one of the first things I would see whenever I entered the main door and it was a curtain that was picked by me and mother when we went shopping for some house decorations years ago. That is what makes it so special because we used to go shopping together before the pandemic.

Reflection

I have spent so many hours for days working on every single garment for the collection. What I have realized is that I am starting to get better at using the sewing machine although my sewing skill is still terrible. Even though every item I made did not turn out the way I wanted them to be, I am still satisfied with what I have done here because I really did try my best to turn my sketch into a real piece of garment. However, I am still not going to beat myself up for messing up so much during the making process because I believe it is just a matter of time before I can be better at it and I all I need is just some more guidance from the lecturers to help me improve.
