Assignment 1: Basic Garment Draping
Description
The first task for students is to understand garment draping. Students are required to understand the body form and marking the right area of bustline, waistline, hipline, and princess line. Princess line is the vertical line that divides the torso in half from center front to side seam. In this project, students are required to drape a basic top and choose one type of princess line cut (classic or modern)and transfer the draping result into a working pattern. Students were required to sew the pattern using Colico Fabric to understand the fundamentals of the draping technique.
PROGRESS: Students are required to mark body form, draping result, transfer paper pattern, and sew to complete the garment.
REQUIREMENTS:
Marking body form using draping tape
Drape on body form
The student shall transfer draping results to the paper pattern
Sew garment on Colico Fabric with linking progress must be capture in the E-blog
Marking body form using draping tape
During the first week, Mr. Riza showed us how to prep your dress form using draping tape before we can start draping the sleeveless basic bodice.
This is the process of cutting the fabric. I have to cut the fabric according to the dummy measurement. It depends on which part of the dummy you want to drape. I also press 1 inch at the center front line.
Then, I take the front panel that I just cut and start pining it up along the front gridlines.
I also do little dashes/ dots to mark the area I want to keep.
After marking, I trim the excess fabric and leave 1-inch seam allowance around the area and I also snip the seam allowance a little bit so it'll be easier to fold it in.
Next, I proceed to do the front side panel by using the exact same steps which are, pin around the gridline, do a little dash to mark the area, trim the access fabric, leave 1-inch seam allowance, snipe the seam allowance and lastly, fold it in as shown.
After the front panels are done. Now I want to drape the backside repeating the same steps.
After I've don't draping the pattern on the dummy, now I'm ready to trace and transfer the front two-piece and the back panels on paper. Before I'm able to do that, I give a little press on the fabric so they are nice and flat when I'm tracing them.
Now I place every pattern I have on a calico fabric and start cutting it. Then, I start pinning up all panels I have on the dummy so I know It'll fit and sewing the basic bodice after I am satisfied with how it looks like on the dummy.
It is time to do the lining. Firstly, using the same patterns I place them on silk fabric. After I have the fabric prepared, I start pinning it up on the dummy to ensure it will fit. Then, I start inserting the lining inside the base fabric by flipping it inside out to see how it would look like from the inside and start sewing it together with the base fabric.
Final outcome!
Reflection
I am still kind of struggling with sewing but in terms of draping, I think the concept of it is pretty easy to understand and it's a lot simpler than having to do your own pattern from scratch. However, there is still a lot of things to improve.
