Fashion of 18th century



Women's fashion Characteristic

Gowns and dresses
  • Shifted body Mantua
  • A round petticoat is worn with an apron
  • Sack back gown
  • Sleeves (bell/trumpet shaped)
  • Sleeves caught up at the elbow to show lace-trimmed sleeves of chemise
  • Sleeve become narrower
  • Neckline- thick band of lace sewed onto neckline with ribbon or flowers
  • Jewelry- strings of pearls, ribbon, or lace frill
Underwear
  • Strays are long waisting cut with a narrow back/ wide front/ shoulder straps
  • Skirts are worn over over small hoops (panniers) during 1730s/ 1740s
  • Small hoops for everday setting and big hoops- Formal setting
  • Chemise- full sleeves and tight

This is a Thom Browne spring 2020 ready-to-wear collection. The silhouette was inspired by the 18th-century era. The shape of the dress resembles the panniers which are the small hoops that is worn underneath the skirt during the 1730s and early 1740s. The model also wears a high wig that resembles the high hairstyles during the mid to late 1770s.










This is a look by Moschino Fall 2020 ready-to-wear collection. In the picture, the model wears a look that's inspired by 18th-century men's fashion. Although the length of the coat is not long enough the designer still reveals the underneath garments to show the shifts between the coat and the trumpet sleeves to give a sense of men's rococo style. The model also wears a jabot attached to the neckband. The model also wears a high that indicates the particular era.








                                                            Hoop petticoats or pannier, English, 1750-80

This is a gown by Stephane Rolland. Although, the main concept is not necessarily inspired by the 18th century, but, the shape of the gown was sort of inspired by the 18th-century gown silhouette which is the panniers.










This is moschino  fall 2020 ready to wear collection. the model wears a dress that resembles the shape of the pannier with embroidered floral motifs. The dress also has a wide square neckline. The model also wears a high wig on. Although, the collection was inspired by the 17th century but the designer only wants to focus on the silhouette rather than the fabrics and sort of change the whole aesthetic into a more contemporary style.




                                                               Replica/ Costume



This is a gown from Gucci fall/winter 2020. The collection was not inspired by the 18th century but there are some attributes of the gown that resemble the 18th-century fashion style, for instance, the sleeve caught up the elbow and is kind of narrow and wide at the end (bell sleeves), the neckline is a square shape with lace trim. The gown does not follow the real characteristics of the 18th-century gown but the silhouette is kind of the same. Even the gown has a lace trim throughout the edge of the fabric.








This is a look by Thom Browne ready to wear in spring 2020. The jacket sleeves caught up at the elbow and then it open wides. The sleeves underneath the jacket are also being revealed to show the shift between the jacket and the shirt underneath it is one of the fashion styles during the Rococo era. The designer also uses pastel colors for the fabric. The model also wears a high wig and really pale makeup on as well as a cherry lip moment.

This is a dress by Dolce & Gabbana 2020. The dress is inspired by the chemise gown during the 1780s. The neckline is square in shape and the sleeves end just above the elbow.







 


This is another look by Moschino 2020 ready-to-wear collection. The Model wears a robe with a side hoop or pannier underneath it. The sleeves also resemble the 17th-century style that is called bell/ trumpet sleeves. There is also a front panel decored with pink ribbons that resemble the stomacher. The model is also being accessorized with a high wig.
