FINAL TASK: MOULAGE PROJECT
(40%-Individual |Week 07–Week 14)

Description

Moulage is a French term also known as draping. In the final project, students tasked to produce garment design from final Fashion Project I module. This project  required  students to explore techniques from marking, fabric pinning and  positioning, and  drape using the dress form. Studentsalso tasked to transfer all  draping  result  into  working paper pattern. Students shall explore all techniques learn from the garment draping module and produce ONE garment with toile making using Colico fabric and sew on Actual fabric to form the complete garment.

PROGRESS: Students are required to mark body form, draping result, transfer paper pattern and sew to complete the garment.

Hey there! for our final project we are assigned to recreate one of our dolls fit into a real human size. During our class meeting, my lecturer and I decided to recreate the first look in the picture below as though its the most simplest one to do.

Keep scrolling down to see the process of making the dress!

The first thing, I did is to drape every single piece for the look which are a top and a skirt and this is how I did it:

Top with sleeves

This is my very first time trying to drape sleeves on the dress form and the process was a lot easier and faster than I anticipated!

I had to expand the middle part to 3m in order to enlarge the bicep part because I forgot to curve my measuring tape a little when measuring the armholes so the width of the sleeves was really short so it made the sleeves really tight.

Skirt Draping

Sewing Process

After I got every pattern I needed for the design, The first thing I do is cut the fabric and get to sewing!

Sewing the top

This is how I added a zipper on the back side:

When the bodice part is ready, its time to sew in the sleeves. I started off by sewing every seam allowance of the sleeves and start inserting them into the armholes and this how I did it:

The top is done for now.. :)

Skirt Making

Then, I proceeded with making the skirt. As usual, all I had to do first is to sew the seam allowance.

I also added a zipper for the skirt on the back because that's where the opening is.

At this point, the skirt and the top are done! I also added the floral ruffle trim along the neckline including the backside to reel the top in.

Tulle Belt Making

Last but not least is the process of making  the tulle belt! this id the step that I was really looking forward to because the tulle belt is going to complete the whole look and adding it will add a new character to the dress.

The procedure of making the tulle skirt was really simple because all I had to do was to cut the tulle fabric according to my desired length and then, I simply just tie a knot using the fabric over and over again until I get the volume I wanted. I actually saw a tutorial on how to do it on youtube because I always wanted to know how do people do the puffy skirt because they look really cute. Gathering the tulle fabric on a sewing machine won't give this much volume/ puffiness and this method doesn't require a needle and thread whatsoever. So I wanted to try it myself and I'm glad that I incorporated the tulle skirt in my design.

Final Outcome

This is how the dress ended up looking like after I put everything together.

Reflection

The most joyful part of the making process was obviously the tulle skirt. I have never done such a thing before so I did learn something new for this particular project. Thus, I'm excited to see what else I'm going to explore and discover in the near future when making some clothes for another project.

Sewing wise, I still have some unanswered questions here and there but it's fine for now and I still have a lot to improve and experience. I just wish I was a little bit patient when making something to receive a better outcome.
