Viktor & Rolf

The Haute Couture Presentation

.."My comment about this collection is that I really like the fact one of the most well-known brands like Viktor & Rolf uses their platform to deliver their message or their POV about the current world issue through the couture show. Like Miss Maria mentioned during last week's class -- fashion is not necessarily always have to be glamorous because sometimes designers use their brand/ platform to deliver stories from social issues to political matters. Although the impacts of the pandemic is something that is widely being talked about on social media and so on, it's really nice and important in a sense to see more people from different industries like fashion talking about it to bring awareness to anyone who might see the collection so that people would take the pandemic more seriously or at least it's something that anyone can relate to and knowing that they're not the only one who's affected by it. This sort of idea of a fashion collection doesn't necessarily imply to the pandemic alone but also any social issues in general that need to be talked about more often.

In previous seasons, the designers had already been espousing a more sustainable approach to fabric sourcing. This time, they worked with local supplies around Amsterdam and drew from their fabric stocks.

I think fashion in the next five years will be a high push towards sustainability. Consumers want more from brands and retailers, and the majority of global consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable products and fashion brands need to start to change the way they operate.

Using sustainable materials like plant and fruit "leathers" made from waste materials, are starting to gain traction with fabrics that last for a long time, durability is another important factor when it comes to sustainable fashion. Creating garments that are recyclable to save our natural resources.

When I look at the collection I think the best way fashion can be more influential to tackle world issues is by being more engaging on social media. This is because, social media comes down to a simple basic human desire: the need to connect with other humans, to be a part of a group. Using social media to connect with the younger generation to deliver messages is a lot more effective because it's something that everyone has access to. Younger consumers are seriously concerned with social and environmental causes, which many regards as being the defining issues of our time. They increasingly back their beliefs with their shopping habits, favoring food brands that are aligned with their values and avoiding those that don't.

As a student, I think it'd be fun if big brands like this open the opportunity to the public by creating a hashtag related to the subject on Instagram so anyone who's interested can participate in the movement by posting their fashion creation that's related to the theme and build a sort of like a community where anyone can be involved and share their creativity while spreading awareness"..
