ASSIGNMENT 01: PHOTO ILLUSTRATION - POP ART (20% - Individual)

The submission must include the following:
  • Choose one figure model as subject matter
  • Create photo illustration using image layering
  • Submission on digital A3 size illustration

We were assigned to look for a picture of a model/ celebrity wearing a designer brand and turn the image into pop art inspired by a pop artist's style.

Before we could get started, we had to conduct a little bit of research on pop art as well as the artist before we could identify the artist that we wish to take inspiration from.

After researching about it, I finally come to a decision to do my pop art poster that is inspired by Andy Warhol's artworks.

Here are some images that I purposed to Mr. Riza during his class. I ended up not using any of these pictures as it was kind of hard for me to find a high-resolution image of them, so, I decided to keep searching for another picture and made up my mind to use a picture of Kim Kardashian during the Oscar after party.

In the picture, Kim Kardashian wears an aqua blue dress with a trail by Balenciaga.

The Drawing Process

The app I used to draw this illustration is called  ibispaint.

I started off, by changing the color of the skin and I also change the background to a solid color to emphasize the subject matter in the poster.

Then, I continue adding the sun rays in the background to create a more retro style in the picture. It also drags the viewer's eyes directly to the subject matter and that creates a stronger sense of emphasis.

I continue painting the background so it wouldn't look to plain and boring.

Then, I got this random idea to remove the background to have a little bit of contrast between the color of the sunrays and the background so the image won't look too flat and there's a little bit of dimension.

This Andy Warhol-inspired poster is such a simple idea and we're almost done at this point. After showing Mr.Riza the illustration during his class, we got the idea to add the brand's name in the background.

I decided to use black text for the brand's name to separate the background and the subject matter to emphasize the subject matter even more.

Lastly, I kept adding the text in the background repetitively until it covers up the entire background.
