Notes of final collection

 Notes:

Garment 1 (MON)

  • Write a summary describing your collection, no less than 200 words. With title of the collection (summarize a meaning behind the title) and the season you are thinking of doing for your final collection. Write about in the inspiration or message behind your work, details you are introducing, styles, garment categories.
  • Continue your study pieces related to your final collection:
  • techniques, details that you want to experiment with, with comparable fabrics or muslin.
  • *Study pieces should be life-size and mini-test pieces (fabric manipulation). Finishing for presentation by week 7*
  • Document your process with your study pieces with pictures, to those who have started, we shall begin making variations by Monday 17/4
  • (Week 3): -1 x toile look by week 6
  • Start on the final line-up (in conjunction to design sketches), how many dress, tops, bottoms etc. Continuous assessment.

Collection Description

Collection's name:

Season: fall winter

[Insert Collection's name] is Fall/Winter ready-to-wear collection. The collection is conceived of architectural conceptual design and it is originally inspired by the Taichung Convention Center by MAD. The convention center was designed as a pleated skin consisting of concrete and glass. In textile manufacturing, pleats are made by folding material and fastening or pressing to hold the shape of the pleat. The incorporation of pleats as a continuous weave of architecture and landscape blurs the boundary between architecture, public space, and urban landscape, proposing a futuristic vision which is the main characteristic that drives the whole collection. Furthermore, pleats can be created and morphed in various patterns for interesting textures and forms giving a unique impression on the collection. The Taichung pleated form looks like the pleated skirt of the woven material and would be made of a stiff material (concrete, glass) but acts like a curvilinear structural form. Additionally, Interesting forms of the design structure within the collection were also inspired by Richard Sweeney’s Pleated Paper Sculptures. The silhouette of the collection was driven by the sculpting and paper manipulation technique by the artist which was inspired by organic structures and growth patterns in nature. Advanced origami techniques and the geometry of straight lines are used by the artist to achieve curvilinear forms with stiff material and linear pleats which is a similar element used within the architecture of the convention center.

Taichung Convention Center by MAD

The Taichung Convention Center's most recent design, by MAD Architects, was made public. Described as "a continuous weave of architecture and landscape that blurs the boundary between architecture, public space, and urban landscape, proposing a futuristic vision based on the East's naturalistic philosophy," the convention centre is the first project in Taiwan commissioned by the Taichung city government.

The project's goal is to go beyond the typical urban landmark and transform Taichung "into the arena of world-class cultural cities through unique architectural concepts and proposing a new kind of architectural philosophy."

The form is an abstract portrayal of the current terrain circumstances with its crater-shaped structure and rotundas.  According to the architects, "It simultaneously shapes and influences the surrounding environment, opening up a dialogue between architecture and landscape."

The building complex will be made up of several mountains-like structures with pleated external surfaces that allow for natural ventilation and can hold photovoltaic panels.

The topology of the terrain and the architecture were to be smoothly merged, according to the architects.

In order to revitalize urban life and reshape the city's cultural landscape, Taichung needs a metropolitan landmark that can transcend the locals. This will catapult Taichung into the league of top cultural cities.

This requires unique architectural concepts and a new kind of architectural philosophy.

Landmark buildings must first and foremost promote public enjoyment, stimulate communication, and ignite the imagination, rethinking our relationship to culture and nature. They can no longer be judged solely by their height or visual effect.

This project is conceived as a continuous weave of architecture and landscape, a futuristic vision based on a naturalistic spirit. The design incorporates the core of the Eastern philosophy of a harmonious cycle between humans and nature, preserving Chinese architecture's long-standing attitude towards holistic integration and order of space.

The architecture is portrayed as a collective form due to the project's huge scale rather than as a collection of separate components.

The resultant spaces come into focus in a natural order emerging from air, wind and light, fostering a resonance between human and nature.

This project's site and schedule are high-energy by nature. The mountains offer a peaceful and uniting skin, yet beyond its serene surface, there are topological potentials just waiting to be uncovered.

On the one hand, the crater-shaped creation of the architecture and the resulting rotundas are a result of the conditions of the finding site.

On the other hand, it creates a conversation between buildings and landscapes by shaping and influencing the surroundings simultaneously.

The'mountains'' surface is made of a high-tech, environmentally friendly pleated skin structure. The building's airflow is provided by the smocking-like envelope, which also uses solar energy to reduce energy usage.

The open courtyards that connect the individual mountains are integrated into a natural sequence of outdoor spaces.

Similar to the Forbidden City and ancient Chinese gardens, which serve as examples of the quest for a harmonious cohabitation between humans and nature, this project looks for deeper significance in its intangible qualities—spaces surrounded by the most naturalistic spirit.

Richard Sweeney’s Pleated Paper Sculptures Examine The Fluidity Of Paper

Richard Sweeney, an English sculptor, appears to have a talent for shaping and working with paper to create amazing, fluid works of art.

Sweeney has a hands-on approach to creation and uses the special properties of everyday materials to discover unique forms while working primarily with paper as a sculptural medium.

Sweeney is inspired by organic structures and growth patterns in nature and is motivated by curiosity to discover three-dimensional forms through the physical manipulation of material.

The movement in the artist's more recent works is fluid, limitless, and unending, like a puff of smoke swirling in the air or the silent flap of a fish fin in the water.

The new sculpture is a step up from Sweeney's earlier, more modular, and adaptable works, and while the actual sculpting labor is just as meticulously planned and time-consuming

One piece can take weeks to complete.

The sensation of weightlessness is distinctive.

When you consider that the pieces are entirely made out of careful paper folds and pleats, the work almost appears poetic. Through tiny cuts, damp folds, and tiny tablets of adhesive, the monochromatic works are given their asymmetrical form to discover their ultimate, abstract, organic shape.

"The artist’s more recent work conveys movement that feels fluid, boundless, and never-ending, like a puff of smoke swirling up in the air, or a silent flap of a fish fin in the water."
